Strawberries and pepper is a classic combination, there’s something about the pepper that really enhances the flavour of the fruit. It’s quite common to imbibe these two with Champagne.
I’m not a big fan of champers but I do love gin (regular readers may have noticed.) Black pepper also goes very nicely with gin and is sometimes one of the botanicals used to flavour it, like in Bombay Sapphire East.
So that was my thinking behind this cocktail, although I was also thinking that I had some strawberries that needed using and that I was getting thirsty!
8-10 very ripe strawberries
1/2 teaspoon (ish) pink peppercorns
squeeze of lemon juice
70-100ml gin (I used Green Hat Summer Gin – because it’s local and my current love, if you live in the D.C area you should seek some out)
Crack the peppercorns a little with a pestle and mortar and then mash or muddle them with the hulled strawberries. I do this straight into my cocktail shaker so that I don’t lose any juice. You want the fruit to be very pulpy.
Add the gin, lemon juice and plenty of ice and shake vigorously. Strain into coupe or Martini glasses and garnish with fresh strawberries and a tiny dash of freshly ground black pepper.
